“Hello? Yes this is your future self calling- I just wanted to get in touch with a quick list of things that are going to save the day for us as long as you start them NOW…”
Wouldn’t it be nice to just get a quick phone call from our future self so we could really know what the right thing to do is? But here’s the thing, we have the ability to plant seeds now that will bloom into something wonderful for our future selves and future business. So, take these tactics and give your future self the gift of success and security in the next 3, 6, or 12 months.
Button Up Your Loose Ends
There’s always “something”- like that random subscription you keep getting charged for but never use, that job you’ve been meaning to post but haven’t gotten to so you’re stuck month after month figuring it out, or that trademark you keep thinking about filing for your latest offer or framework. Honestly, you might be able to keep scraping by the way you always have, but you’re leaving holes in your business. What we want to avoid is an awful situation where your business suffers unexpectedly because one of these loose threads ended up getting pulled too far…
Instead, take time today to write out a “Nagging Needs” list of all the random tasks that somehow keep getting pushed further and further down your to do list. Over the coming week, create action steps under each task and begin implementing until the task is complete.
Do the Thing Before the Price Goes Up
I think we can all agree that if we’re already planning on purchasing something we may as well pick it up off the shelf while the price is still reasonable. No, we’re not going full doomsday here but that old analogy of picking up the non-perishable essentials when they’re on sale isn’t a bad idea. Think of the business purchases you’re already planning on making, and see where you can lean out your spending via bundling, pre-paying, or just buying early.
Imagine for a moment purchases like:
Take time now to either commit and lock in the current price point, select a longer subscription period (like 6 months or a year) to lower payments, or reach out and see if they’ll offer some kind of pre-payment option either with a discount or a guarantee that, should their prices increase, you won’t be impacted.
Give Yourself Permission to Talk About…
You are not just a business or a CEO- you’re a complex human with more interests than you can count. So what happens when there’s a disconnect between the “you” you are, and the person you show up as online? Frustration. This isn’t necessarily about niching down (or up) from your current point, but rather unlocking your niches so there’s room for your uniqueness within them.
Future you wants you to know that you’re allowed to add in more of yourself, you’re allowed to create a multi-dimensional version of yourself as a CEO, and that now is the perfect time to introduce the other sides of yourself to your audience. Six months from now, you could be known as the business strategist who also shares about [that random niche topic or core value you’re committed to outside of your biz]- but only if you allow yourself to lean into it now. Your audience will love it. And if they don’t? They probably were not going to end up being a culture-fit-client.
Start Building a Relationships Now
How many times have you asked yourself, “I wish I knew someone who could share their insight on this, or connect me with a person like that.” The opportunities you want, or will want in the future, are so often possible simply because of a relationship with the right person. So as a gift to your future business self, start going IN on fostering relationships and authentically engaging with people in your community and beyond.
Remember, we’re focusing on building relationships that we can pour into for the long haul. Seek out individuals in your space who:
Re-Assess Your Longterm Goals
There’s something poetic about being determined that a certain thing is your end goal- like going into a certain field or offering a certain kind of service- only to put in months or years of work just to realize it’s really not what you want after all. While journeys like that can actually teach us something about ourselves as business owners, it’s frustrating to look back and think, “I wish I would’ve spent that time pursuing things I’m actually aligned with!”
As you look at your next steps as a CEO, be brutally honest about your goals. Maybe you always said, “I want to a huge luxury retreat!” but you’re now realizing that intimate VIP days are more your scene. You might have expected to become the person who created an evergreen course and capped it at that, but have discovered you LOVE speaking at in-person events regarding the course topic so now you want to start a robust speaking side of your business. Perform a short and longterm audit of your business goals, and be bold about shifting where you feel it’s right- your future self will thank you.
